Apply for Funding
If your journal article meets all the requirements, please click the button below to begin the application process.
Please note, due to the end of AU's fiscal year, invoices for approved OA Fund applications cannot be processed until July. Thank you for your understanding.
Please note! The criteria for this fund will be updated beginning July 1, 2025. The fund will be limited to full-time faculty who serve as corresponding authors for the published article. Additionally, the fund will be paused June 15 - July 1 for the end of the fiscal year.
The library's Open Access fund helps researchers pay the article processing charges (APCs) associated with publishing in open access journals. We are providing these funds in order to encourage researchers to publish their work in high-quality open access publications. In order to ensure quality while supporting research from all AU disciplines, the journal in which your work will be published must meet certain criteria as detailed below.
In addition to the Open Access fund, please check the library’s Publishing Agreements for a list of publishers with whom AU researchers can automatically publish open access with the majority of the publisher’s titles, including Cambridge, Springer Nature, and PLOS!
We welcome feedback, questions, and other correspondence at oafund@american.edu, and encourage interested faculty to email for assistance with the application process.

Open Access(OA) describes the online, free-to-register, public access to the scholarly journal literature that has until very recently been only available to the reader through subscriptions or affiliation with an institution that pays subscription fees.
Such "subscription-only" access significantly reduces the possible dissemination, impact, and engagement between scholar, funding institutions, and the public that ultimately funds the research endeavor.
